In the heart of Silicon Valley, new history and advances are constantly being created on top of the old. This series came about from documenting a mid- 1950-60s ranch style home, that was slated to be demolished. It was to be replaced by a new very modern architecturally clean box, but the new owners had foresight to salvage as much of the materials of the existing home before demolition.

 In my documentation I moved from one space to the next, studying and capturing the visual simplicity, and as it progressed, there was a revelation of deeply layered patterns, textures, and tones that were grounding the emptiness of the house. The longer I stood in the spaces composing the frame, the simplicity morphed into a depth of visual complexities and juxtapositions. There was this richness of wallpaper patterns, ghosts of furniture locations on the carpet, and hints of old technology in the rooms. The spaces began to engage the mind, imagining the people and the experiences that must have taken place against these soon to be harvested backgrounds.

 Upon completion, I left with a feeling of satisfaction and guilt. Satisfaction that at least I had saved the imprint of another time and place, but with the guilt that it was now time to close this environment’s chapter. Ironically, the evolution of the Valley continues with parallels to this home. Vast orchards that once populated most of the region, having been replaced by new architecture, technology, patterns, and tones.
